今回は、4月からPHLIGHT英会話の講師となったJenny先生をご紹介！優しく明るい性格で、日常会話からビジネス英語まで、幅広い分野を教えることができる講師です。Jenny先生の故郷や、趣味について聞いてみました。

ー　出身は？

私はフィリピンのセブ市で生まれ育ちました。私と家族は私が10代前半の頃までそこに住んでいました。その後、セブ島の南部にある、穏やかなジンベエザメが生息するOslobに引っ越しました。Oslobは私の母の故郷です。観光客が多くて、ジンベエザメがいるところ以外は、とてものどかな田園地帯です。また、Oslobの人たちはとても優秀でスポーツ万能、そしてとても親切な人たちです。

ー　趣味は？

空き時間、特に通勤する電車の中でマンガを読むのが好きです。それに関連して、有名な『進撃の巨人』から『ノラガミ』のような過小評価されているものまで、多くのアニメシリーズを鑑賞することもあります。その他、友人と一緒にオンラインFPSゲームを楽しんだりしています。また外出した時は、その地域の特産品を試したり有名なスポットを訪ねたりしています。また、遊園地に行くのも好きで、富士急ハイランドの「高飛車」のような過激な乗り物にも挑戦しています。

ー　どうして日本に来たいと思ったんですか？

私は物心がついたときからアニメオタクで、またアニメと比較して、文化、食べ物、人々、そして言語に至るまで、現実の日本はどうなっているのかということに興味と好奇心を持っていました。また、写真で見た美しい景色にも魅了され、日本をバケットリストから外すわけにはいきませんでした。

ー　英語の講師を目指したきっかけは何ですか？

最初は、経験として英語の講師になろうと考えました。その上で、この業界に入ってからは、生徒が英語学習の目標を達成した姿をみて、その満足感や充実感に惹かれ、今もこうして教えることがますます好きになり、教える技術を磨いています。

ー　英語を学ぶ上でのTipsを教えてください！

英語も他の言語も、学ぶのは決して簡単ではありませんが、ニュースや映画、音楽など、聞き慣れるまでゆっくりと英語に浸ることです。メモをとったり、英語で会話してみたり、英語を恐れないことです。 練習、練習、練習。そして最後に、楽しんでください！

ー　将来の夢を教えてください！

何の制約もなく旅行がしたいです。訪れた場所の文化や伝統を余すところなく楽しみたいです。新しいことを学んだり、体験したりすると、いつも達成感を感じます。自分が存在することの証明になるような気がします。

ー　最後に、英語学習者へのメッセージをお願いします！

人生は七転び八起き。転んでもまた立ち上がる。くじけずに前を向いて歩いていこう。猿も木から落ちる。

– Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Cebu City, in the Philippines. Me and my family lived there until my early teenage years. We moved to the province of Oslob which is home to the gentle whale sharks, in the southern part of Cebu. Oslob is my mom’s hometown. It’s quite a peaceful countryside, except the part where you can find the whale sharks since most tourists gather there. The people of Oslob are also very talented and athletic, and very hospitable.

– What’s your hobby?

I enjoy reading manga during my free time, especially when I’m on the train commuting to work. In relation to that, I also watch a lot of anime series from the famous Shingeki no Kyoujin to the underrated ones like Noragami. Other than these, I also enjoy playing online FPS games during my free time, together with my friends. When I’m outside, I find myself visiting other prefectures to try their specialties or visit some famous spots. I also like to visit amusement parks since and try the extreme rides, such as the Takabisha in Fuji-Q Highlands.

– Why did you choose Japan?

I’ve been an anime otaku for as long as I can remember, and because of that, I’ve been interested and curious how things are in real life, from the culture, to the food, to the people, and even the language, compared to anime. The scenic spots I’ve seen in pictures have also enticed me in every way that I can’t just miss Japan out of my bucket list.

– Why did you become a teacher?

At first, I thought I would try becoming a teacher as a means of experience, and because I’ve always taught my younger cousins stuff about their school subjects, especially when they needed help. Once I got into the industry, I’ve been in love with how fulfilling it is to see my students satisfied with their goals in learning the English language, and that’s how I’m still here and becoming more and more in love with teaching and perfecting my craft.

– What are you tips to learn English?

English is and any other language are never easy to learn, but just immerse yourself in English language slowly, until you get used to hearing the language, such as the news, movies, or even music. Take notes, have conversations in English, don’t be scared. Practice, practice, practice. Lastly, have fun!

– What’s your dream/ life goal/ vision for the future?

I would love to be able to travel with no restrictions. I want to be able to enjoy every part of the culture and tradition the places I visit have to offer. I always feel a sense of achievement when I learn and experience something new. It makes me feel that there is a proof that I exist.

– Give a message to English learners!
