今回はJoyce（ジョイス）先生をご紹介します！

楽しくハッピーな性格のジョイス先生は、丁寧なレッスンが人気の講師です。趣味はおいしい食事とコーヒーを目指してお店を散策することなのだとか！

ビジネス英語と日常会話を教えるのが得意で、丁寧にわかりやすく教えてほしい方に相性が良い先生です。

そんなジョイス先生に、レッスンで意識していることや、どういった経緯で英語講師になったのかをお聞きしました。

ー　出身は？

フィリピンのセブ島北部の美しい場所で生まれ育ちました。白い砂浜と美味しい魚介類がある場所として知られています。

ー　趣味は？

運動と瞑想をすることを兼ねて自然散策をすることです。日本に来たことで更にカフェ巡りも好きになり、美味しいコーヒーや食べ物を楽しむようになりました。

写真を撮ることも趣味の一つで、携帯やデジタルカメラ、フィルムカメラで撮ったりしています。記録を残しておくことや美しい瞬間、場所、雰囲気を切り取ることが好きなんです。

他にも読書やテレビドラマ、YouTubeを見ること、様々な音楽を聴くことも好きです。

ー　どうして日本に来たいと思ったんですか？

多くの人と同じように、日本の文化にとても関心があったからです。日本には魅力的なものが沢山あると聞いていました。

また、私は大学在学時や卒業時日本語の勉強に惹かれていました。海外で働くことを考えた時、いつも一番に頭に思い浮かんだ国は日本です。

だからこそ、このように全てが自分の思い描いていた通りになって非常に嬉しいです。この会社に入り、日本で働く道を切り開けたことに感謝しています。

ー　英語の講師を目指したきっかけは何ですか？

高校の英語講師との出会いが大きなきっかけです。彼女の教え方や人生に対する考え方がとても好きでした。英語が高校で一番好きな科目だったのも理由の一つです。文法の勉強や色々な英語の文章を読むことを楽しんでいました。

ー　英語を学ぶ上でのTipsを教えてください！

英語学習者の目標の一つは、英語を使って自分の考えを分かりやすく、正確に、かつ自然に表現できるようになることだと思います。そのためには、まず単語の知識を増やしていくことが大事です。日常会話で役立つ単語や、よく使われる単語の組み合わせ、定型フレーズなどがありますよね。しかし、ただ単語の知識を増やすだけで満足してはいけません。

私達が学ぶ単語は受動的、または能動的なものです。そして、聞けば分かるけれど、いざ会話で使おうとすると自信がなくなってしまうのが受動的な単語です。一方能動的な単語は会話の中で正確に、自信を持って使えるものです。英語を上達させるために、この受動的な単語を能動的な単語に変えて使ってみましょう。

他にも英語のニュース記事や短編小説を読むことも英語の理解力を上げ、単語の知識を増やすうえで非常に役立ちます。

ー　将来の夢を教えてください！

将来、私が受け持った生徒の方々が英語を使って仕事や勉強の場で活躍することです。世界を旅して、現地の人々と自信を持って会話をしながら視野を広げていってほしいとも思います。

– Where are you from?

I was born and raised in a beautiful island located in the northern part of Cebu in the Philippines. My island is famous for its white sand beaches and high-quality seafood products.

– What’s your hobby?

I love going on nature walks as my form of exercise and meditation. Being in Japan is also making me even love exploring cafes and enjoying good coffee and food.

I am also into any sort of photography may it be mobile, digital, or film. I find joy in documenting memories and capturing the beauty of moments, places, and surroundings.

I also enjoy reading good books, watching TV series, listening to various music, and watching tons of YouTube videos.

– Why did you choose Japan?

Like many people, I was always curious about the culture in Japan. I have heard so many fascinating things about Japan growing up.

Also, during college and after college, I was drawn to studying the Japanese language. Whenever I would think about working abroad, for some reason, Japan would always be on the top of my head.

I am grateful that everything just aligned for me. I am grateful to have joined a company in Cebu that paved the way for me to be able to work here in Japan.

– Why did you become a teacher?

The one that ignited the spark in me to become a teacher is my English teacher in high school. I loved her way of teaching so much and her principles in life. English was my most favorite subject in high school too. I enjoyed studying grammar and reading all types of literature.

– What are you tips to learn English?

One of the goals in learning a language is to be able to express our thoughts clearly, accurately, and naturally. With that, I recommend the students to continue acquiring vocabulary words, some helpful expressions for daily conversations, some common word collocations, and phrasal verbs.

However, acquiring more words is not just enough. Words that we learn can either be passive or active. Passive words are words that when we hear them, we understand but cannot confidently use in speaking. On the other hand, active words are the words we can appropriately and confidently apply in our speech. I challenge you to turn your passive vocabulary words into active ones.

Reading English news articles and short novels is also greatly helpful in improving your comprehension skills and vocabulary.

– What’s your dream/ life goal/ vision for the future?

My vision for my students in the future is that through English they could excel more in their jobs or studies. Also, I could see them traveling the world and speaking to locals confidently whilst gaining a wider perspective on life.
